Learn Canasta: Tutorial

The Deal
Welcome to Canasta! This is a partnership card game for 4 players in two teams. Players 1 & 3 form Team 0, and Players 2 & 4 form Team 1.
Canasta uses two standard decks plus 4 jokers (108 cards total). Each player is dealt 11 cards. One card is flipped to start the discard pile, and the rest form the stock (draw pile).
The goal is to create melds (groups of 3+ cards of the same rank) and ultimately form canastas (melds of 7+ cards). The first team to reach 5,000 points wins!
Drawing Cards
Each turn begins with the drawing phase. You have two options:
1. Draw from stock: Take the top card from the draw pile. Simple and safe.
2. Take the discard pile: Pick up the entire discard pile, but you must immediately meld the top card with at least 2 cards from your hand.
Taking the discard pile can give you a huge advantage -- sometimes picking up 10+ cards -- but it requires having the right cards in your hand.
If the pile is frozen (a wild card or black 3 was discarded), you need a natural pair (two non-wild cards) matching the top card to take it.
Melding Cards
After drawing, you enter the melding phase. A meld is a group of 3 or more cards of the same rank.
Melds can include wild cards (Jokers and 2s), but you must always have more natural cards than wild cards, and a maximum of 3 wild cards per meld.
Your team's first meld of each round must meet a minimum point value based on your team's score:
- Score below 0: 15 points
- Score 0-1499: 50 points
- Score 1500-2999: 90 points
- Score 3000+: 120 points
Card values: Joker = 50, Ace/2 = 20, K-8 = 10, 7-4 = 5.
Special Cards
Several cards have special roles in Canasta:
Wild Cards (Jokers & 2s): Can substitute for any rank in a meld. Worth 50 (Joker) and 20 (2) points. Discarding a wild card freezes the discard pile.
Red Threes (3 of Hearts, 3 of Diamonds): Automatically laid down when drawn -- they are never part of your hand. Each is worth 100 bonus points (or 800 for all four!). But if your team has no melds at round end, they become penalties instead.
Black Threes (3 of Clubs, 3 of Spades): Cannot be melded normally. Discarding one temporarily blocks opponents from taking the pile.
Building a Canasta
A canasta is a meld of 7 or more cards. Your team must complete at least one canasta before anyone can go out.
There are two types:
- Natural Canasta (no wild cards): Worth 500 bonus points
- Mixed Canasta (has wild cards): Worth 300 bonus points
In this example, Team 0 has built a natural canasta of Kings (7 Kings, no wilds) worth 500 bonus points, plus the card values. They also have a mixed canasta of Queens (5 Queens + 2 wild cards) worth 300 bonus points.
Team 0 can now go out since they have at least one canasta!
Going Out
A round ends when a player goes out -- plays or melds all remaining cards from their hand (with an optional final discard).
To go out, your team must have at least one canasta. You may also ask your partner for permission before going out ("May I go out?"). Your partner answers yes or no, and you must respect their answer.
Going out bonus: 100 points.
Concealed going out (first meld of the round includes going out): 200 points.
After going out, scores are tallied: meld card values + canasta bonuses + red three bonuses - remaining hand cards for both teams.
Scoring a Round
At the end of each round, each team's score is calculated:
Positive points:
- Card values in melds (Joker=50, A/2=20, K-8=10, 7-4=5)
- Natural Canasta bonus: 500 pts
- Mixed Canasta bonus: 300 pts
- Red Threes: 100 each (800 for all 4)
- Going out: 100 pts (or 200 concealed)
Negative points:
- Cards left in hand are subtracted at face value
- Red Threes become penalties if team has no melds
Team scores carry over between rounds. First team to 5,000 points wins the game!
The Frozen Pile
The discard pile becomes frozen when:
- A wild card (Joker or 2) is discarded on top
- A black 3 is discarded on top (temporary -- only blocks the next player)
- Your team has not yet made their initial meld this round
When the pile is frozen, you can only take it with a natural pair from your hand that matches the top card. No wild cards can substitute.
Freezing the pile is a key defensive strategy -- discarding a wild card or black 3 at the right moment can prevent opponents from picking up a large pile!
Game Over
The game ends when one team's cumulative score reaches 5,000 points or more at the end of a round.
In this example, Team 0 has reached 5,120 points after Round 3, winning the game!
Strategy tips:
- Build toward canastas early -- you cannot go out without one
- Watch the discard pile -- taking a large pile can be game-changing
- Coordinate with your partner about when to go out
- Use wild cards strategically in melds, but save some for defense
- Red threes are free points, but only if your team melds!
Good luck!
