On your turn, you must play a card that matches the suit or rank of the top card on the discard pile.

The discard pile shows the Queen of Hearts. You can play:

- Any hearts card (matches suit)

- Any Queen (matches rank)

In this hand, the 7 of Hearts and 5 of Hearts both match by suit. If the top card were a Queen of any suit, you could play your Queen to match by rank.

Eights are wild! You can play an 8 on any card, regardless of suit or rank.

When you play an 8, you get to choose the suit that the next player must match. This is a powerful move -- you can change the game to a suit that helps you and hurts your opponent.

Here Player 1 has an 8 of Spades in hand. Even though the top card is the 6 of Diamonds, the 8 can be played. After playing it, Player 1 might declare "clubs" to force the next player to match clubs.

If you cannot play any card from your hand (no matching suit, rank, or 8), you must draw one card from the draw pile.

After drawing, your turn ends and play passes to the next player. If the draw pile runs out, the discard pile is reshuffled (except the top card) to form a new draw pile.

In this example, the top card is the King of Clubs and Player 1 has no clubs, no Kings, and no 8s. Player 1 must draw from the draw pile.

The game ends when a player plays their last card. That player wins!

Here Player 1 has played all their cards and won the game. The key to winning is managing your hand wisely:

- Save 8s for when you really need them

- Match suits strategically to control the flow

- Watch your opponent's hand size -- if they are down to one card, try to change the suit!
