Learn Durak: Tutorial

The Deal
Welcome to Durak, the classic Russian card game! The name means "fool" -- and the goal is to not be the last player holding cards.
Durak uses a 36-card deck (6 through Ace in each suit) for 2-6 players. Each player is dealt 6 cards. One card is placed face-up under the draw deck to reveal the trump suit for the entire game.
In this example, the trump suit is hearts (shown by the trump card at the bottom of the deck). Trump cards can beat any non-trump card!
Attacking
The game is played in bouts. Each bout has an attacker and a defender (the player to the attacker's left).
The attacker starts by playing any card from their hand as an attack. For example, Player 1 attacks with the 9 of Clubs.
The attacker can play additional attack cards later, but each new attack card must match a rank that is already on the table (from either attack or defense cards). The total number of attack cards cannot exceed 6 or the defender's hand size, whichever is smaller.
Defending
The defender must beat each attack card. To beat a card, you must play a card of the same suit but higher rank, or any trump card if the attack card is not a trump.
For example, to beat the 9 of Clubs, the defender could play:
- The 10, J, Q, K, or A of Clubs (higher rank, same suit)
- Any heart card (hearts are trump this game)
Here the defender plays the K of Clubs to beat the 9 of Clubs. If the attack card is already a trump, you can only beat it with a higher trump.
Trump Cards
Trump cards are the most powerful cards in Durak. The trump suit (determined at the start) has special properties:
- A trump card beats any non-trump card, regardless of rank. A 6 of trumps beats an Ace of any other suit!
- To beat a trump card, you need a higher trump card.
- The trump card visible under the deck is drawn last.
In this example, hearts are trump. The defender has no high clubs to beat the Queen of Clubs, but can use the 8 of Hearts (a trump) to defend. Use trumps wisely -- they are precious resources!
Taking Cards
If the defender cannot (or chooses not to) beat an attack card, they must take all cards from the table -- both attack and defense cards go into the defender's hand.
After taking, the defender does not get to attack next. Instead, the bout skips them: the next player after the defender becomes the new attacker, and the player after that becomes the new defender.
Taking cards is sometimes strategic -- it may be better to take a low card than waste a trump. But be careful: the more cards you have, the harder it is to shed them all!
Successful Defense
If the defender beats all attack cards, the bout is a successful defense. All cards on the table go to the discard pile and are out of the game.
After each bout, players draw cards from the deck to refill their hands to 6 cards. The attacker draws first, then other players clockwise, and the defender draws last.
After a successful defense, the defender becomes the new attacker and attacks the next player to their left. This is the reward for a good defense!
End Game
Once the deck is empty, the game enters the endgame. No more cards can be drawn, and players must play with what they have.
Players who empty their hands leave the game (they are safe!). The game continues until only one player has cards remaining -- that player is the Durak (the fool) and loses!
If both players empty their hands at the same time, the game is a draw.
Key strategies:
- Save trumps for the endgame when they matter most
- Attack with pairs of the same rank to make defense harder
- Count the remaining trumps to know when it is safe to attack
Game Over
The game ends when all players but one have emptied their hands. The last player holding cards is the Durak (the fool)!
Here Player 2 is stuck with cards while Player 1 has shed all theirs. Player 2 is the Durak.
Tips for winning:
- Play low cards early when the deck still has cards to draw
- Trump strategically -- do not waste trumps on small attacks
- Track what has been played to predict opponent's hand
- Attack with matching ranks to force multiple defenses
- In multiplayer games, coordinate with other attackers to overwhelm the defender
Good luck -- and don't be the fool!
