Learn Five Dice: Guide

1–4 players · 20–30 min · Easy to learn

Overview

Five Dice is a dice game combining luck and strategy. Roll five dice up to three times per turn, trying to make scoring combinations. Choose which category to score in each turn, but each category can only be used once. The highest total score wins.

History

Five-dice scoring games go back to Yacht, a public-domain game from the early 20th century, and to Latin American Generala. The 13-category score sheet became the most widely played form, with Yatzy as its Scandinavian cousin.

Strategy

  • Go for the upper section bonus (63 points)

It requires averaging 3 of each number.

  • Five of a Kind bonuses are valuable

Go for them when the dice allow.

  • Don't waste the Chance category early

Save it for a bad turn.

  • Full House requires exactly 3+2, not more.

  • If you have a bad roll, sacrifice a category you're unlikely to score well in anyway.

  • Small straights (1-2-3-4 or 2-3-4-5 or 3-4-5-6) are easier than large straights.
