Learn Pinochle: Guide

Overview

Pinochle is a trick-taking game using a 48-card deck (two of each 9, 10, J, Q, K, A in each suit). Points are scored through melding (card combinations) and by winning tricks containing scoring cards (aces, tens, kings). Complex bidding and melding make it deeply strategic.

Strategy

  • Bid based on guaranteed melds plus realistic trick expectations.

  • Aces and tens are worth winning

    Plan to capture them.

  • Lead trump early to pull opponents' trumps and control the hand.

  • The Pinochle (Q spades + J diamonds) is common

    Watch for it in melds.

  • Pass point cards to your partner's won tricks when possible.

  • Memorize common meld values to bid accurately.

  • Two-handed Pinochle

    Special dealing and play for two players.

  • Double-deck Pinochle

    80 cards, higher meld values, faster play.

  • Auction Pinochle

    More complex bidding structure.
