Overview

Euchre is a fast-paced partnership trick-taking game popular in the Midwest US, Canada, and the UK. Using only 24-32 cards, the game features a changing trump suit each hand and unique 'bower' cards (the jacks) that become the highest trumps.

History

Euchre originated in the early 19th century, possibly from the Alsatian game Juckerspiel. It was extremely popular in America before being overtaken by Bridge. The Joker was invented for Euchre.

Strategy

  • Order up with at least three trump including a bower, or strong side cards.

  • The left bower is tricky

Remember it counts as trump, not its original suit.

  • Lead trump to pull out opponents' trumps, especially if you have both bowers.

  • Going alone is risky but rewarding

Consider it with very strong hands.

  • As defender, try to save your highest trump for the critical third trick.

  • Watch the upcard and passes to deduce what opponents and partner might hold.
