Introduction
Welcome to Euchre, a fast-paced partnership trick-taking card game!
Euchre uses a 24-card deck: only the 9, 10, J, Q, K, and A of each suit. It is played by 4 players in two partnerships:
- Team 0: Players 0 & 2 (partners)
- Team 1: Players 1 & 3 (partners)
Each player receives 5 cards, with 4 remaining in the kitty. The top kitty card is turned face-up as a potential trump card.
The goal: be the first team to reach 10 points by winning tricks!
Calling Trump: Round 1
Trump selection happens in two rounds. In Round 1, the turned-up card's suit is proposed as trump.
Starting left of the dealer, each player may:
- Order up: Accept the turn card's suit as trump. The dealer picks up the turn card and discards one card.
- Pass: Decline and let the next player decide.
If all 4 players pass, Round 2 begins.
The player who calls trump becomes the maker. Their team must win at least 3 of 5 tricks to score. Failing to do so is called being euchred -- a costly mistake!
In this example, the Jack of Diamonds is turned up. Players decide if diamonds should be trump.
Calling Trump: Round 2
If everyone passes in Round 1, Round 2 begins. Now each player may name any suit except the turned-up card's suit as trump.
Again, starting left of the dealer:
- Call a suit: Name your preferred trump suit. You become the maker.
- Pass: Let the next player decide.
If all pass again in Round 2, the hand is re-dealt (some variations require the dealer to pick).
Choose wisely! Having strong cards in your called suit is important, especially the Jacks (the most powerful cards in Euchre).
The Bowers
In Euchre, the two most powerful cards are the Bowers (Jacks):
- Right Bower: The Jack of the trump suit. This is the highest card in the game.
- Left Bower: The Jack of the same color as trump. This is the second highest card.
Importantly, the Left Bower counts as a trump card for all purposes (following suit, winning tricks).
For example, if Hearts are trump:
- J of Hearts = Right Bower (highest)
- J of Diamonds = Left Bower (second highest, counts as a heart!)
Card ranking in trump: Right Bower > Left Bower > A > K > Q > 10 > 9
Card ranking in other suits: A > K > Q > J > 10 > 9
Playing Tricks
The player left of the dealer leads the first trick. Play follows standard trick-taking rules:
1. The lead player plays any card
2. Other players must follow suit if able (remember: the Left Bower is trump, not its printed suit!)
3. If you cannot follow suit, play any card
The trick is won by the highest trump played, or the highest card of the led suit if no trump was played.
Only 5 tricks are played per hand. The team that wins 3 or more tricks scores points.
The lead rotates to the trick winner.
Going Alone
When you call trump, you may choose to go alone -- playing without your partner for the hand. Your partner's cards are set aside.
Why go alone? If you sweep all 5 tricks alone, your team earns 4 points instead of the normal 2!
Going alone is risky but rewarding with a very strong hand. Ideal conditions:
- You hold both Bowers (Right and Left)
- You have the Ace of trump
- You have off-suit Aces for the lead
If you go alone and win only 3-4 tricks, you still score the normal 1-2 points. If you are euchred (take fewer than 3), the opponents score 2 points.
Scoring
Points are awarded after each hand based on tricks won:
Maker's team wins 3 or 4 tricks: 1 point
Maker's team wins all 5 tricks (march): 2 points
Maker goes alone and wins all 5: 4 points
Maker is euchred (fewer than 3 tricks): Opponents get 2 points
The first team to reach 10 points wins the game.
Being euchred is very costly -- not only do you fail to score, but your opponents gain 2 points. Only call trump when you are confident your team can take at least 3 tricks!
Winning the Game
The game ends when a team reaches 10 points (or the configured target).
With only 5 tricks per hand and a 24-card deck, Euchre is one of the fastest trick-taking games. Matches typically last 15-30 minutes.
Key tips:
- Call trump when you hold 3+ trump cards, especially Bowers
- Short suits help -- being void lets you trump early
- Go alone with very strong hands for the 4-point bonus
- Communicate through your play -- lead aces to signal strength
- Never underestimate the Left Bower -- it is the second most powerful card
- Protect your partner from being euchred by supporting their leads
Good luck!
