Learn Skat: Guide

3 players · 20–30 min · Hard to learn

Overview

Skat is Germany's national card game for exactly three players. One player bids to become the soloist and plays against the other two working together. Complex bidding, the 'skat' (two-card kitty), and multiple game types make it deeply strategic.

History

Skat was developed in 1810-1820 in Altenburg, Germany, evolving from older games. It became Germany's most popular card game and has official tournament rules established by the International Skat Players Association.

Strategy

  • Bid based on worst-case jack configuration

    Don't assume perfect trumps.

  • The ten is more valuable than king or queen

    Protect your tens.

  • As soloist, draw out opponents' jacks early to establish control.

  • Defenders should signal suits where they can help their partner.

  • Null games (win zero tricks) require very specific hand shapes - bid carefully.

  • Counting card points is essential

Know when you've secured victory or defeat.
