What are the basic rules of Durak?

The player with the lowest trump starts by attacking the player to their left. Attacker plays a card; defender must beat it with a higher card of the same suit or any trump. Other players can add to the attack with cards matching any rank already in play.

Empty your hand before others. The last player holding cards is the 'durak' (loser).

Oversigt

Durak is the most popular card game in Russia. Unlike most card games, the goal is not to win but to avoid losing - the last player with cards is the 'durak' (fool). It's an attack-defense game where one player defends against the others.

Opsætning

Use a 36-card deck (6s through Aces). Deal 6 cards each. The remaining deck is the draw pile. The bottom card is placed face-up, and its suit is trump for the game.

Maximum attack cards = defender's hand size (usually 6).
If defender successfully beats all cards, those cards are discarded.
If defender cannot or chooses not to defend, they pick up all cards.
After defending (or picking up), everyone draws back to 6 cards from the stock.
When the stock is empty, play continues until one player remains.

The last person holding cards is the durak (loser). Everyone else wins. In some social versions, the durak deals the next game.

Strategitips

Save your trumps for desperate defenses - they're precious.

Attack with pairs or cards of similar rank to make defense harder.

Passing the attack (playing the same rank to the next player) is a powerful option.

Don't waste high cards attacking - you might need them for defense.

Watch the trump card at the bottom - when it's drawn, no more trumps are coming.

Late game, having trumps matters more than hand size.

Durak emerged in Russia in the early 20th century and became immensely popular during Soviet times. It remains the most played card game in Russia and throughout the former Soviet states.
