Oware

Regole complete e guida strategica

Panoramica

Oware is a traditional mancala game from Ghana and the most widely played variant in Africa. It's known for its elegant capture mechanism and emphasis on planning ahead. The game is played in two phases: sowing and capture.

Obiettivo

Capture more seeds than your opponent. The first player to capture 25 or more seeds (out of 48) wins.

Preparazione

The board has two rows of six pits. Each pit starts with 4 seeds (48 total). Players sit facing each other, each controlling the six pits on their side. There are no separate stores - captured seeds are kept aside.

Come giocare

  1. On your turn, pick up all seeds from one of your pits containing seeds.
  2. Sow counterclockwise, dropping one seed per pit, including opponent's pits.
  3. If you sow 12 or more seeds, skip the original pit on your second pass around.
  4. Capture condition: If your last seed lands in an opponent's pit and brings it to exactly 2 or 3 seeds, capture those seeds.
  5. Continue capturing backwards: if the previous pit also has 2 or 3 seeds, capture those too. Stop when a pit has 1, 4+ seeds, or you reach your own side.
  6. You cannot make a move that would capture all opponent's seeds (must leave them at least one seed to play with).
  7. If a player cannot move (all their pits are empty), the opponent captures all remaining seeds.

Vincere la partita

The game ends when one player captures 25+ seeds (instant win), or when too few seeds remain for either player to capture more. Player with more captured seeds wins.

Consigli strategici

  • *Count seeds carefully to plan captures several moves ahead.
  • *Build up large seed counts in your pits for powerful sowing moves.
  • *Avoid leaving pits with 1 or 2 seeds in range of opponent's sowing moves.
  • *Force your opponent into positions where they must feed your capturing opportunities.
  • *The 'grand slam' rule (can't capture everything) can be used strategically.
  • *Endgame technique is crucial - learning to force wins with small seed differences.

Storia

Oware is the national game of Ghana and one of the oldest games still widely played. It spread throughout Africa, the Caribbean, and beyond through cultural exchange and the African diaspora.
