Questions
Win tricks with your partner to score points. First team to 10 points wins.
Use a 24-card deck (9s through Aces) or 32-card (7s through Aces). 4 players in partnerships. Deal 5 cards each. Turn up one card to propose trump.
Scoring: 3-4 tricks = 1 point. All 5 tricks = 2 points. Going alone with 5 = 4 points. Euchred = 2 points for defenders. First team to 10 points wins.
The turned-up card proposes trump. Starting left of dealer, players may 'order up' (accept trump) or pass. If ordered up, dealer takes the upcard and discards one. That suit is trump. If all pass, the upcard is turned down. Players may name a different suit as trump, or pass again.
Order up with at least three trump including a bower, or strong side cards. The left bower is tricky - remember it counts as trump, not its original suit. Lead trump to pull out opponents' trumps, especially if you have both bowers.
Euchre originated in the early 19th century, possibly from the Alsatian game Juckerspiel. It was extremely popular in America before being overtaken by Bridge. The Joker was invented for Euchre.
